Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is an annealed glass that is heat-tempered to strengthen and make it safe to use in locations required by safety codes. It is normally used in locations such as doors, windows close to doors or lower floor levels. State and federal safety codes will determine the lawful areas where tempered glass is required.

There are other areas that tempered glass is not required by codes but it often makes good sense to use in lieu of annealed glass due to the added durability. Tabletops are a good example, as annealed glass can break easily by applied weight or even by excessive heat in a small area of the glass surface. Tempered glass is much stronger when weight is applied or is exposed to excessive heat.

Tempered glass is cut to size and fabricated to specifications while it is in annealed form, then it is heat-strengthened in an oven to exact specifications. Once the glass is tempered, it cannot be cut or further altered in shape or edge finishing.
